The History of Rotary Club

We especially seek current or former leaders of businesses and the professions who would enjoy our friendship and that of other Rotarians nearby and around the world.

Founding

The Rotary Club of South Bend Indiana is the 4th chartered in the State, formed in 1914 with the mission of creating a businessman’s philanthropic organization that would serve South Bend by establishing recreational centers throughout the community and give active assistance to Federated Charities, the predecessor to the United Way. From its humble beginnings of 14 members to its present size nearly 200, the Rotary Club of South Bend has evolved into a broad-based, vibrant organization of professionals who value diversity and celebrates the contributions of people of all backgrounds, regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Today

We have weekly luncheon meetings with a wide range of speakers who educate, inform, and entertain us on interesting and important topics.  Rotarians from other cities and countries frequently visit.  In addition to our own club’s projects, we partner with other area Rotary clubs and with Rotary District 6540 to provide service to South Bend and its surrounding communities.  We often partner with clubs in other parts of the world for projects such as clean water or disaster relief and we support Rotary International on global initiatives including the eradication of Polio.  Our projects are funded by member donations and by grants from our South Bend Rotary Foundation.

"Service Above Self"

Our club’s vision is to welcome all who are inclined to give back to the community of their time, treasure and talents. We are unified by the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self” and strive to improve our communities and the world, make new friendships, and have some fun while doing it!
